Are
you ready? Are you sure?
Here's
our pre-conception lifestyle checklist:
Stop
using birth control pills:
- Give
your body a two or three month break before you really start trying
to conceive. It may take awhile for your body to get back to it's
own natural rythym. It can take up to 12 weeks for the effects of
birth control pills to leave your system.
Start
taking prenatal vitamins:
- Your
body has essential needs for creating and maintaining a pregnancy.
Follic Acid, Iron and Vitamin B to name a few.
Maintain
healthy living:
- Make
an appointment for a general physical to ensure that you're in top
health. Discuss with your doctor whether you should be concerned about
how any medications you might be on would affect or be affected by
conception. Are you up to date on your vaccinations?
- Make
an appointment for the dentist as well. Have a full set of x-rays
taken. You want to be sure that you can treat what you can before you
actually do conceive.
- Eating
right, eliminating stress, following a moderate exercise plan, eliminating
harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and any environmental
hazards will help ease and maintain conception.
- Caffeine
is a big no no! It's rough getting up and heading off to work without
that extra kick sometimes, but studies have shown that women who consume
more than 3 cups of coffee daily have lower conception rates by about
27%. Vitamin intake can help boost your energy, and it's a much healthier
alternative.
Get
to a healthy weight:
- If you've
been too careful cutting back calories, or have been enjoying them
too much then it's time to get back to your body type's correct weight.
A balanced diet that includes all the food groups is key. Remember
that you want to provide a healthy environment to nourish a baby.
Pregnant or not, you're goal is eating for two now, just not yourself.
Take
a step back on the excess
- If you've
been training for a marathon, working long hard hours with meals on
the fly, or spending more time traveling than at home, it's time to
cut back. Find creative ways to get the job done to allow your body
to slow down it's metabolism and decrease stress.
Remember
mental health is just as important as physical health
- Actually,
it might even be more important. Stress, emotional situations and
exhaustion all effect how we eat, sleep and function. It's time to
get creative here as well and figure out how you can delegate some
of your work and home responsibilities so that you have less stress
in your own life. Ask yourself, "Does it really need to get done
right now/ today?" If the answer is no.....delgate it, or postpone
it.
Talk
to your partner, know your plan.
- Make
sure you're both on the same page emotionally and that you can handle
the changes in finances that a baby will bring.
- Review
how your career will be affected, and exactly how maternity leave
will affect your job and your health insurance.
